The Owner Surrender Process

GABR understands there are circumstances when it's best for the basset to be rehomed.  At times it can be a very difficult and emotional process. We strive to make it as stress-free as possible.

For your convenience we have included the GABR Surrender Form in this section for you to fill out, sign and submit. The only dogs we cannot accept are dogs who are aggressive with humans and other dogs. We also need a recent picture of your basset sent at the same time.  We will take some mixes if they look more like a basset. Please write on the form if you have a timeline.

A GABR representative will call you within a day of receiving the form and pictures. We will arrange a pickup if you are unable to transport.  The dog will be taken to one of our approved vet clinics for an exam, altered and updated on shots if necessary.  It's important to fill out the Medical records section of the form so we don't repeat shots unnecessarily.  Please state whether your dog has been on Heartworm preventative and when it was last given.

After the dog leaves the vet clinic it will go into a foster home, usually with other dogs/bassets. The foster home will evaluate him/her and work on any issues in order to prepare for adoption. This process may take two weeks, two months or more depending on the dog. When ready the dog will be posted on our website unless adopted to an applicant on our waiting list.  In that case, the adoption picture will be posted on our Facebook page and the website “Happy Hounds” page.

Thank you for taking the time to read about our surrender process.  We hope you will decide to let us care for your basset and find a new loving basset home.
