HOW CAN I HELP SUPPORT THIS CAUSE?

We at Guardian Angel Basset Rescue Of Illinois (GABR - just call us "gaber") will be much appreciative of any help you can provide. It can be lots of work to care for, nurture back to health (in some cases), and find good homes for Basset Hounds. It is a rewarding service which is why we took on the responsibility.

But as you can imagine, taking in these needy pets does require resources between the time that they are brought into GABR to the time that they are placed into a welcoming and caring family. In light of that, for the Basset Hounds sake we ask that you lend a helping hand to Bassets that aren't as fortunate as maybe your own dog. Just a small donation can feed one of these homeless pets for several weeks.

Some ways you can help:
Adopt A Basset · #1 Best Way To Help
Ultimately, these Bassets will need a permanent place to live. If you would like to have a warm and friendly companion that loves to give you attention, then a Basset may be the dog for you. They are very intelligent and they tend to love children.

If you are considering adoption from us, we will talk with you first and help find out if a Basset is the dog for you. If it is, then we will work to find the ideal match. Although our floppy-eared friends are usually over one year old, they generally do not need to be house broken. You can't say that for a puppy.

If you would like to know more, please call us at 815-773-9913 or email us. If you are sure you want to adopt a Basset, just fill out our online form for adoption.

Call us to make an appointment at: (708) 758-7455 or e-mail GABR.

ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS

If you intend to adopt one of these lovable Bassets as your companion, we do require that you consider the following:

  • Dogs must be kept as house pets...indoors.
  • We recommend a fenced-in yard.
  • The entire family must agree that a Basset is right for them.
  • A history of responsible pet ownership is a plus.

We do have a necessary $175 adoption fee to cover: spaying/neutering, heartworm test, rabies vaccinations, parvo/combo vaccinations done prior to adoption, as well as the necessary daily feeding and caring and medical needs as they arise. This is all taken care of while the homeless Basset is at one of our foster homes.

Basset Hound Characteristics

Basset Hounds are silly, sweet, and affectionate characters. They are wonderful with kids of all ages, generally get along with almost anyone, and enjoy the company of other dogs as well as cats. They are very easily spoiled. They love your company, but generally will not bother you or demand your full-time attention. They are an independent, intelligent, loving companion and you'll be sure to enjoy there silly antics.

Even though the Basset Hound has a mind of its own, it is still obedient - when it chooses to be.

Bassets also needs plenty of exercise. Young Bassets under the age of 3 are not "couch potatoes" but are very lively. They need consistent and patient training and are not the easiest dogs to housetrain.

If anyone in the family is allergic to dogs, a Basset will activate that allergy. Bassets shed all year round. Bassets drool and have a habit of getting their ears wet, when they shaking their heads.

Bassets do have one health problem that is predominant and that is ear infections.

Basset Hounds are hunters by nature and can sniff out a rabbit with ease in the backyard or find that cookie under the sofa. Because of their good sense of smell, they track scents very well and are second only to that of the Blood Hound.

Bassets have a special hound scent. It won't take long though before you are so use to it that you don't notice it. Check out this unique pet and adopt one today and give a Basset a good home.

Become A Foster Home To A Basset In Need

The number of bassets turned over to GABR have greatly increased every year. This has increased our need for foster homes. Having enough foster homes for Bassets increases the chances for successful adoptions. If we don't have enough foster homes available for rescued Bassets, we are forced to send them to a dog kennel. It is better to have them stay in an environment where the Basset will have a loving, caring family to keep them safe and happy while waiting for their permanent home.

You may have some concerns about providing your home as a foster home for homeless Basset Hounds. The following questions and comments are common concerns. The answers are provided to help you to make an informed decision.

"I just don't have the time or space for another dog."

If you already have a dog, an extra bowl of food, treats, and time spent with the Basset can be managed with not much addition to your existing schedule and resources. Instead of taking 1 dog for a walk you'll have 2 companions. The space needed by your foster Basset is just a blanket on the floor, in a warm place in your house so that it has a place to take a nap.

"I don't think my dog(s) would get along with a new dog."

Once in a while you might have a dog that may be bothered by the presence of a new dog. However this is not usually the case. Much of the time your own dog gets along OK with the new Basset Hound and may very well become fast friends. Your dog can entertain the foster and helping them to learn the rules of the house. Dogs, like people, have their likes and dislikes in personalities. If it happens that your dog and the foster are at odds, arrangements will be made as soon as possible to move the Basset to another foster home.

"I wouldn't be able to give up the foster."

This can be difficult for some people. Try to stay focused and remember why you are fostering. You want to help a homeless Basset find a home of his/her own. Another one will need your home later and you want to be able to take it in and have room for it too. If you ever need advice just contact the GABR Group. They are very much willing to share their advice and to listen to your concerns as well.

"How do I find a home for my foster?"

This last one you don't have to worry about. People contact GABR when they want to adopt a basset. When a good home is found for your foster Basset, you will be contacted with the details.

If you love dogs, fostering will be one of the most satisfying, and rewarding experiences for you. Please, consider opening your home to one of our needy Basset Hounds. You'll feel good about making a difference in the lives of these homeless pets.
