One of the saddest things for me is when I get a phone call from someone
who wants us to take a dog 8 years or over (a senior citizen). I know
this dog is going to be hard to place and will stay in one of our GABR
foster homes for a very long time.
So often I hear, "I would love to take an older dog but I or my
children don't want to get attached and then lose him soon." Have
you ever thought of it this way:
- A senior dog is less trouble; they are usually the couch potatoes.
- A senior dog has lots of love to give and is very appreciative of
the love they receive.
- Although 9-11 years is the average life span for a Basset, many live
to be 14 or 15 years old.
- Dogs don't necessarily cost more as they age. Many live to be a ripe
old age without needing any medication or additional vet care.
- Death is a part of the circle of life. Children who witness the loss
of a pet can be helped to understand that there will be sad times when
we lose someone or something we love.
- Of course we cry when we lose a pet but remember to celebrate the
good and happy times you shared with your pet.
- Be grateful for whatever time you had together whether it is 15 years
or 15 months.
I hope this will cause some of you to consider adopting
a senior dog. GABR has some great seniors available.
In an effort to find homes for our seniors, the GABR Board has initiated
a special adoption fee for the seniors - ask your adoption
coordinator about it.
Thank you,
