Foster Home Procedures

After receiving foster home kit, check to make sure you received all the items. Please acquaint yourself with forms. The new kit will include:

  • 2 collars and 2 leashes
  • 2 I.D. tags and S hooks
  • Relinquishment forms
  • Adoption forms
  • "About Your New Basset" form
  • Criteria and Suggestions forms
  • "Don't … On My Carpet" booklet
  • List of approved vet clinics

When picking up dog from shelter or owner you'll need:

  • Relinquishment form (for owner give ups). Have owner fill out and sign before leaving.
  • Collar & leash I.D. tag (record # on relinquishment form). Put I.D. tag on dog's existing collar or new GABR collar.
  • Crate for transportation
  • Folder for health records. Be sure to get all the health records available or name of veterinary clinic who has records. Some shelters will have a fee. Call ahead to make sure and the rescue will reimburse you.

When picking up foster from the veterinary clinic, ask for a record of services without prices. Add this to the health record file.

After bringing home foster, start filling out the form, "About Your New Basset". Have this form and suggestion form completed by the time of adoption.

Take picture of foster, if necessary, for the web page along with a description of dog and send to Larry Little at P.O. Box 288, Dwight, IL 60420. If you have a scanner or digital camera, you can e-mail the picture and information to bbroker@btc-skynet.net.

The main purpose of a foster home is to observe the dog's behavior and temperament. You may or may not see signs of stress or anxiety during the adjustment period. The form "About Your New Basset" has very useful information on this subject. You will work together with the adoption coordinator to find the right permanent home. If you need help with your foster feel free to call your coordinator. You are not expected to deal with more serious problems.

At the time of adoption:

  • Have new owner fill out contract and pay adoption fee of $150.00. For puppies who are too young to be spayed or neutered, an additional $100 deposit is required. The deposit will be returned when the owner shows proof of spaying or neutering. They can pay by cash, check or Visa/MC. When paying by credit card, record number and expiration date on adoption contract.
  • Make sure all health records are in order including form "About Your New Basset" and give to new owner. Basset should have new collar, leash and I.D. tag.
  • If possible, take picture of new owner with Basset, or ask owner to send picture, along with a paragraph or two about the new dog, to Larry Little at P.O. Box 288, Dwight, IL 60420.
  • Record I.D. tag # on adoption form. Include relinquishment form, if you have it, and send to Fran Gray, 185 E. 34th Street, Steger, IL 60475.
  • Send check, money order, or credit card information to treasurer, Emmy Little, 611 N. Franklin Street, Dwight, IL 60420.

After two or three days, follow up with a phone call to new owner.
