house and yard. She seemed lost and whined constantly as if she was looking for something. We assumed she missed all the animals she had been with
even kennels. I remembered Orvie’s squeaky toy – a blue fuzzy bunny. I brought it out to play but she had no interest with playing. She took it very was
calling her. She would take off and come back proudly displaying her bunny. It had to be with her and she had to know where it was. We later found that
she had had puppies before going to the shelter. It made sense. She missed her puppies and the blue bunny provided comfort to her. She has no need
for it now.
Peaches simply didn’t seem a good name for this gorgeous big gal. She is gentle and polite – always waits to be invited upon the couch. She is very quiet
most of the time. She whines when she needs us to do something for her such as going outside, go for a walk, or dinnertime. We aren’t quite sure how we
came up with her name but when it did, it was Miss Ruby D ( Miss Ruby Downs). She knew this was her new name immediately. We had some concern
because it didn’t sound anything like her old name.
Miss Ruby D is a beautiful dark chestnut and black color with a white chest. She has very long ears and fantastic droopy eye wrinkles with two white
eyebrow hairs over each. She is a good size gal and has a great “Waddle Rear” ( a great little wiggle when she waddles). Her expressions get her just
about anything she ( or, perhaps, we ‘think’ she needs). No matter, it works for her and that makes us happy. She has accepted a stray male cat into our
home without problems. Tom likes her as well. Ruby is fine with him but would rather tom not be on mom’s lap. Not a problem, they both manage to be
there at the same time!!
We do not know about her previous home but we do know from certain behaviors that someone didn’t treat her well. She is the only basset I have known
never to roll over for a belly rub. She does a bow and lifts her paw for the scratching of the belly. The Veterinarian needed to roll her over for an exam and
learned immediately that she was absolutely terrified. She also seems afraid of anyone with a load of packages in their arms. She will simply back away in
fear. Coming home to her the first time we left her was a real experience. She came running to us barking as if she was going to attack. We had never
seen anything like that. All she was doing was telling us how glad she was we were home and then to give us her opinion about being gone. She will do this
no matter if we are outside for a while and come in. Coming home to her is such a wonderful feeling that we almost want to leave to come back to the
welcome.
Miss Ruby D volunteered her personal services to announce the Early Bird Drawings for the Corvette Raffles. She wants to do more now and has agreed to
help other bassets and owners with those little “moments” of misunderstandings and other concerns. She cannot give medical advice and suggests that you
go to the “Ask Dr. Lou” tab for that. When Miss Ruby D needs expert advice, she has enlisted the help of consultations from a couple of our trainers, Jan
Carlson and Sharon Andrews. To aid Miss Ruby D, she has appointed her mom, Ginny, to translate your letters to her.
You will find a questionnaire to aid with information needed to help us with your concerns. We will do our best to answer your questions as quickly as
possible. Ruby knows how important it is for owners to understand their bassets. We do know the saying “ If mamma ain’t happy, no one is happy” and the
same goes for the basset!!
Miss Ruby D came into rescue at age 5 with the name “Peaches”. She had been given up because the owner had too many
animals and could not financially care for. She was taken to a local shelter where she was examined and given vaccinations. A
few days later she was transported to Dwight where she stayed at the Veterinary Clinic. She had been given a bordatella vaccine
for kennel cough but already had the disease. She was given antibiotics for this nasty disease and eventually recovered in her
new home.
