GABR is an all volunteer, not-for-profit 501(c) 3 charitable organization who relies on supporters dedicated to rescue. We are a licensed shelter with the Department of Agriculture for Illinois and Missouri. We serve take in, rehabilitate and rehome approximately 300 bassets a year. There are many ways you can volunteer.
Please read the following brief descriptions about the different areas you can help.
FOSTER HOME: GABR needs people to become foster homes. The responsibility of fostering includes evaluating, training and caring for the needy hounds. We require each home be willing to house train and crate train every dog. The foster home is the dog’s advocate in finding the perfect forever home for that dog. You will interview prospective forever families and decide if they are what your foster dog needs. There is plenty of support from your Foster Home Coordinator and Adoption Coordinators throughout the fostering process. GABR pays for all the medical needs of each dog, you just pay for food while the dog is in your care.
TRANSPORTER: GABR needs help moving these hounds around from shelters, vet clinics, foster homes, etc. You can specify how far you will be willing to travel, which days are best and you decide how often you can help. This is the easiest way to volunteer if you cannot foster.
FUND RAISING: GABR has two main fund raisers during the year, The Basset Ball in April and the Waddle Weekend in September. During the Ball we have silent and live auction items and at the Waddle we have two days of raffle items. If you are a crafter or artist, we're always looking for unusual or hand-made items as well as donated new items. You can also help with obtaining items for the auction and raffle.
INTAKE: GABR often needs daytime volunteers who can identify full bassets in person at shelters and from surrendering owners, then transport them to a boarding kennel or the closest approved vet clinic. In some cases it would be very helpful to act in the capacity of a short-term caregiver until a foster home opens up. This could range from a couple days to a couple of weeks.
NEWSLETTER: The GABR Pantin'Graph is published four times a year. Feel free to submit that funny story about your basset or that priceless picture you want to share with other basset lovers. The newsletter is published FOR the members/subcribers and ABOUT the members/subscribers, so please share!
SPECIAL EVENTS
PetExpo: The PetExpo is an annual event usually scheduled around St. Patrick's Day weekend. Dog and cat venders, shelters and rescues set up booths to create awareness of the their organization or product. GABR sets up a booth, hands out information and has a raffle give away. Volunteers sign up to man the booth for a 2-3 hour shift.
Basset Ball: Every April after tax day we have our spring fund raiser held at Jennifer's Garden Banquet & Convention Center in Morris, IL. It's a night of appetizers and champagne served during the silent auction items, then dinner and the live auction. Volunteers are always needed to help set up the many items up for auction. They can also assist during and after the auction.
Basset Bash & Waddle: We need a lot of folks to help during our fall fund raiser each September. We have registration booths, membership booths, raffle booths that all need man power to help them run smoothly. If you have an hour or two to give that weekend it would greatly help.
